DNA Bird Sex Determination

DNA Bird Sex Determination

The determination of genre through DNA (sexing birds) is a non-surgical tool used by veterinarians, breeders and owners to know the genre of their birds that cannot be determined through physical appearance and other characteristics. The exam can be done on feathers, blood or eggshell, according to your choice.

Blood X Feather

The sex determination can be done with samples of blood, feather (shaft or dry pulp) or eggshell. The blood of birds is an excellent source of DNA and for many years it has been the only type of sample used for exams.
However, to collect a sample of blood is sometimes annoying and occasionally impossible. With recent advance in DNA technology, we can now extract the necessary DNA to determine the genre of your bird from some plucked feathers. The blood and the feather are equally reliable and provide the same level of test accuracy. The DNA is DNA; it doesn’t matter from what part of the animal it has been collected. The method you choose depends on your preference.

Advantages of DNA Sex Determination

Comparing the traditional exams such as endoscopy, and DNA sex determination:
  • Decreases the risk of hurting birds;
  • There’s no need to transport the animal (no transportation);
  • It can be done in any age (ideal for offspring sex determination);
  • It’s reliable due to use of high technology;
  • For each analysis it is necessary two growing feathers or four dry pulp feathers, or a drop of blood collected with our kits.
